Anonymous, South German, circa 1640. Very rare gilt-metal 'Falling Bail' clock. Spherical, two-piece, the lower section cast in brass to provide weight, the upper spun from copper. Revolving silvered hour ring with engraved and waxed Roman chapters and half-hour divisions, fixed quarter-hour ring at base, with blued-steel pointer. Circular brass plates with turned balluster pillars, gut-line barrel, short train with verge escape, now with brass balance, flat balance spring with regulator adjusted by the hour pointer. Motion-work driven from the barrel arbor. In. good condition Diam. 105 mm. Notes A narrow slot approximately 2cm. long can be seen in the upper portion of the sphere. terminating with the letter S. This is now blocked, but was originally for the ' hog's bristle' slow/fast (schnell) regulator, removed when the balance spring was fitted circa 1700.
