Madhras Maurer, Fiesa, Italian, circa 1740. Very rare small gilt-metal striking and alarm table clock with original fitted case. Shaped hexagonal, glazed side windows with engraved panels (three replaced), hinged bezel and base with turned feet and finials. Suede-lined tooled leather fitted travelling case. White enamel, Roman hour and Arabic five minute numerals(small damages. Engraved gilt brass Louis XV hands with concentric alarm disc. Hexagonal with gilt backplate, goingtrain with fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain brass balance with flat balance spring. Engraved and pierced gilt continental cock. Hour-striking with provision for repeating and alarm on a bell(alarm train with alterations). Signed on the backplate. In fairly good condition. Diam. 71 mm. Notes Table clocks with an italian signature are rare; the name Maurer is of German origin, and the style and workmanship are indeed in the South German style. and it seems likely that Madhras(sic) was originally from there.
