Jeremiah Johnson, Exchange Alley, circa 1685. Fine and very rare 8-day going silver pair-cased watch. Double body outer and inner, both plain and polished. Silver champlevé with central rosette chased decoration, Roman numerals and engraved half and quarter hour divisions, Single tulip blued-steel hand. Gilt brass full plate with pierced floral pillars, four wheel train, fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain steel three arm balance, three turn balance spring with Tompion regulator, open-work florally pierced balance cock with large irregularly pierced foot. Signed on the back plate. In good condition. Diam. 58 mm. Notes Eight day going watches from the XVIIth century are particularly rare. This example has evidently been in France for some time during the XVIIIth century, as a neat steel endpiece, as introduced by Julien Le Roy, has been added and a concealed inspection slot has been pierced to assess the deptbing of the escapement, a common feature on the continent.
