William Anthony, London, No. 1912, circa 1800. Magnificent 18ct. gold, enamel, diamond and pearl-set 8-day oval watch, made for the Chinese Market. two-body, massive, engraved band, the bezels set with a rouble row of split-pearls,back panel decorated with translucent blue enamel, with a band of formai patterns in blue, white and red, navette-shaped rose-diamond central motif bordered by applied gold split-pearl set scrollwork. Hinged and bright-cut engraved giltmetal cuvette. Notes This is a fine example from the small group of oval 8-day watches, always signed by Anthony ( Ganthony), which were made for the Chinese Court in Peking.ln common with the majority of the finest decorative watches destined for China, these were originally made in pairs, but as most were "acquired" by Europeans during the Boxer rebellion they have been split up over the intervening years.
