John Ellicott, London, No. 2249, with London hallmarks for 1741. Very fine 22 ct. gold pair cased watch. Outer double body, the bezel repoussé with rocaille and floral decoration, the back repoussé with an allegorical figure of Fame, holding a shield bearing a bust of a man, with a seated figure of Britannia on the right, St. Pauls and the Monument ( to the Great Fire of London) in the background. Inner bassine polished. Both cases marked "I.B." ( John Beesley). White enamel with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minute ring. Gold " spade" bands. Hinged gilt brass full plate with elaborate pierced and engraved pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain steel three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass cock pierced and engraved with a mask and foliage. Signed on the back plate. In very good condition. Diam. 49 mm. Notes Note: A cylinder watch by Thomas Mudge, hallmarked 1738 , the outer case repousé with a similar scene, signed Moser, was sold by Sothebÿ s on 7 June 84. St. Pauls and the Monument appear again on a gold Freedom Box, also signed Moser, which was given to Christian VII of Denmark in 1768 on the occasion of a State Visit to England. See T.P.
