Lepaute à Paris, circa 1775. Very rare and small, hour and half hour striking, eight day going early "pendule d' officier", in original fitted leather travelling box. GiIt bronze with applied cast foliage decoration, folding handle at the top, the bezel with floral chased decoration. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minute ring. GiIt bras chased and pierced Louis XV hands. GiIt brass circular full plate with going barrels both for the going and the striking trains, cylinder escapement, plain brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass pierced and engraved continental cock with polished steel end-piece. Striking on a bell with count wheel on the back plate. Signed on the dial. In very good condition. Dim. 18 x 9 x 6 cm. including the handle. Notes Such clocks were usually produced in Switzerland toward the end of the XVlllth century and the beginning of the XIXth. They were slightly larger, quarter repeating, "grandesonnerie" with alarm, but with a 36 hours going train only. They were reputed to be used by officers in campaigns. This example, slightly smaller, appears to have been made earlier by one of the finest makers of the period and can be considered as the progenitor of the famous "pendules d'officiers".
