Jas. Cox, London, English, circa 1780. Very rare gold mounted agate bodkin case containing a watch. Two part with cylindrical grey agate panels and roccoco style repousse scroll work and florally chased mounts, the interior with cylindrical tube to hold needles. Hinged top bezel with rose diamond set frame. GiIt full plate, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain 3-arm brass balance with flat spring and regulator. Floral and scroll pierced and engraved bridge cock. Signed on the movement. In good condition. Dims. 112mm overall length. Notes James Cox was a renowned maker of clocks, watches and objects for the Chinese market and particularly the Imperial Court during the latter half of the 18th century. Many of his objects were constructed on a gigantic scale, but the movement contained within this case must be counted amongst the smallest fusee watches ever made. The diameter of the back plate is less than 14mm. in total.
