Berthoud Frères, No. 216, circa 1818. Rare and important marine chronometer, made in Louis Berthoud's workshop, after his death. Silvered regulator type, with small Roman chapter for hours, subsidiary seconds below, outer Arabic minute ring on the border of the bezel and small 24 hour up-and-down sector at "10". Bluedsteel Breguet hands. Brass full plate,delicate sun-burst pattern stone finished, with steel conical pillars secured by ruts with washers. Fusee with chain, maintaining power, fully jewelled, pivoted detent escapement, two-arm compensation balance, with poising and timing screws, bluedsteel helical balance spring with terminal curves. Signed on the dial and the back plate. In very good condition. Dial diam. 80 mm. Dim. 150 x 150 x 150 mm. Notes Although made after his death, this chronometer is identical to those produced by Louis Berthoud as soon as 1800. Previously in the L. Leroy collection, this chronometer is very similar to No. 215, described and illustrated by J.C. Sabrier : The Longitude at sen in the tiene of Louis Berthoud and f l e u r i Motel.
