Notes Louis-Philippe Albert d'Orléans LE COMTE DE PARIS Born in Paris on 24 August 1838 to Ferdinand, Duc d'Orléans and Princess Hélène of Mecklenburg- Schwerin, he was the grandson of King Louis Philippe. Following the death of his father in 1842 and the 1848 revolution, which overthrew a reigning family with few roots in France, he accompanied his mother and brother, the Duc de Chartres, to settle in Eisenach in Germany, where he finished his studies, concentrating on literature and science, and undertook several journies in Europe and the Orient. The outbreak of the Civil War in America prompted the two brothers to set sail for the New World, where, in a gesture probably designed to attract general attention, Louis-Philippe Albert volunteered to serve under the Confederate Hag. Given the rank of Captain to the Chief of Staff in 1861, he was appointed aide-de-camp to MacClellan, then leading the army of the Potomac. He participated in a fruitless campaign against Richmond, was present at the siege of Yorktown and the battles of Williamsburg, Fair Oaks and Gaine's Mill, before joining the general retreat to the James River. His decision to abandon the ranks of the Army and return to Europe in 1862 prompted mixed feelings in the minds of those close to him.
