Notes Biography Harry S. Truman, American Politician (1884-1972). Democrat Senator in 1935, Vice-President of F.D. Roosvelt, he became President of the United States in 1945 until 1953. He ended WW II by using the atomic bomb against Japan in 1945. He signed the peace treaty with Japan in 1951. He also implemented the Marshall Plan for the building of Western Europe. Potsdam: German city south-west of Berlin. The Conference of Potsdam took place in July-August 1945 between Truman, Staline and Churchill (then Attlee).
