John Joseph Enneking (American, 1841-1916) An Old Woman Sewing. Signed and dated "Enne..." c.r. Oil on canvas mounted on Masonite, 17 1/16 x 13 1/8 in., framed. Condition: Retouch, craquelure, varnish inconsistencies, signature reinforced. Provenance: Grace Enneking Ward (daughter of the artist), to The Cloran Galleries, Boston, to Rolf H. Kristiansen, Hyde Park, Massachusetts, to Mrs. Pauline Erickson, Boston, Massachusetts. N.B. Two letters, including a letter of authentication, from Rolf H. Kristiansen written February 25, 1985, accompany the lot. Kristiansen states that the sitter may have been the mother of Mary Eliot Enneking, or, as was the common belief, the aunt of John Greenleaf Whittier. He surmises that this painting may be one of the series Enneking painted in the old Whitter house. This painting will be included in the John Joseph Enneking Catalogue Raisonné by Patricia Jobe Pierce.
