William Bradford (American, 1823-1892) Labrador Coast Settlement Unsigned. Oil and charcoal on canvas on a panel stretcher, 28 x 45 in. (71.1 x 104.2 cm), framed. Condition: Craquelure, surface grime. N.B. Richard Kugler has kindly contributed the following paragraph: "During the early years of his career as an artist, Bradford made six summer visits to the coast of Labrador, finding there a steady flow of icebergs and the primitive housing of its native inhabitants. He would later undertake an even bolder venture in the steam-powered vessel Panther which carried two photographers who took some of the earliest photographs of the Arctic scene."
