Matilda Auchincloss Brownell (American, 1871-1966) Girl in the Chinese Porcelain Room , alternately titled At the Morgan Collection Signed and dated "Matilda Brownell/1910" l. r., identified on two exhibition labels affixed to the frame backing. Oil on canvas, 34 x 24 in. (86.5 x 61.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, minor retouch, minor paint losses, surface grime. Provenance: Gift from the artist to Dean Worcester, son of Susan Kirkham Worcester, then by descent within the family. Exhibitions: Twenty-fifth Annual Exhibition of American Oil Paintings and Sculpture, Art Institute of Chicago, Nov. 13 - Dec. 25, 1913, #42 (under the "Morgan" title); Panama-Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, 1915. N.B. The figure in this painting, Susan Kirkham Worcester (1873-1958), is named on a label affixed to the backing. The painting's provenance is detailed in a letter from Dean Worcester, Jr., dated September 30, 1987, also affixed to the backing. The painting remained in the possession of Matilda Brownell in her Carnegie Hall studio until the artist closed the space and offered the painting as a gift to the Worcester family in the early 1960s. The painting was exhibited at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, a world's fair held in San Francisco in 1915 that celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal. Painting has been lined. Minimal retouch confined to a small area in the l.l. quadrant. Small areas of paint loss in the figure's bodice and sleeve. Read more…
