Emile Albert Gruppé (American, 1896-1978) Covered Bridge in Snow , 1945 Signed "Emile A. Gruppé" l.r., inscribed "Painted Fall 1945" on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 25 x 30 in. (63.5 x 76.0 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime. Provenance: Nord and Ruth (Smith) Bowlen, Greenfield, Massachusetts; by family descent to a private collection. N.B. The lot includes two letters from Emile Gruppé to the painter Nord Bowlen in Greenfield, Massachusetts, dated October 18, 1945 and July 11, 1958. The envelope from the 1945 letter bears the following inscription, "Gruppé letter of the time this painting done at a DVA demonstration. Great Guy. R.E.B." "DVA" most likely refers to the Deerfield Valley Art Association, and the inscription suggests that this painting was done as a demonstration by Emile Gruppé. Minor scattered scratches in an area measuring 2 x 1 in. along the center right edge. Foxing or staining to the reverse of the canvas.
