William Lester Stevens (American, 1888 - 1969) Landscape with Gnarled Tree Signed "W. Lester Stevens N.A." l.r., inscribed "Billings" on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in. (40.7 x 50.9 cm), framed. Condition: Mild canvas deformation, surface grime. Provenance: Nord and Ruth (Smith) Bowlen, Greenfield, Massachusetts; by family descent to a private collection. Subtle bulge to canvas in l.l. corner, possibly caused by a former slipped stretcher key; may benefit from having stretcher keys tightened; fine craquelure to areas of heavier impasto, naturally occuring pigment fluorescence.
