Attributed to Arthur Wesley Dow (American, 1857-1922) Lot of Two Landscape Sketches Unsigned. Oil on canvas mounted onto board, both 10 x 14 in. (25.4 x 35.6 cm), framed (under glass). Condition: One with canvas loss u.r., surface rubs, surface grime. N.B. In a report on these sketches, Frederick P. Moffatt noted that between 1893 and1900, Dow was experimenting with flattened forms, synthesized colors, and asymmetrical compositions inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, but he also continued to paint less exotic interiors, landscapes, and coastal scenes. The present sketches compare most readily with the more conservative offerings of the 1893-1900 period, and probably fall somewhere around 1900. We wish to thank Frederick C. Moffatt, for his help with this entry. The paint loss in u.r. corner of painting with bridge measures approximately 1 x 1/2 in. No additional condition issues to report.
