Fritz Winter (German, 1905-1976) Blau auf Schwarz Initialed and dated "FW 53" l. l., titled, signed, and dated "...FWinter 53" and identified on a label from Kleemann Galleries, New York, on the reverse. Oil on burlap, 18 x 24 in. (45.7 x 61.0 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime, subtle canvas deformations. N.B. Winter was born the son of a coal miner and spent his late teens and early twenties working as a mining electrician. He was inspired to begin painting after seeing works by Vincent Van Gogh and Paula Modersohn-Becker. In 1927, he attended the Bauhaus in Dessau where he was a student of Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Oskar Schlemmer. Upon completing his study in 1930, he worked with Naum Gabo as a freelance artist. He participated in solo and group shows throughout his career, and was a professor at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste from 1955 to 1970. Minor abrasions beneath frame liner, surface abrasions, burlap is slack on stretcher bars and may benefit from tightening stretcher bar keys.
