William L'Engle received his artistic training at the Art Students League in New York, the Academie Julian, and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and met his artist wife Lucy Brown while studying abroad. He worked for most of his life in the figurative tradition, creating portraits and genre scenes of Provincetown, but in the early 1950s began to experiment with abstraction. The present work is an example from his Weather Map series, where he used New York Times daily national weather map forecasts as the basis for his depictions of the Cape and Islands.
