Lucy Stelle Brown L'Engle (American, 1889-1978) Graffiti Signed and dated "Lucy L'Engle 1951" l. r. Gouache, ink, and graphite on paper, sheet size 18 1/4 x 23 in. (46.4 x 58.4 cm), unframed. Condition: Taped to backing mat. Provenance: Through the estate of William and Lucy L'Engle, Massachusetts. N.B. Lucy L'Engle attended the Art Students League, and subsequently the Academie Julian where she studied with Albert Gleizes. She shared a kindred spirit with her husband, and not surprisingly, their work was mutually influenced. Like her husband, her body of work consists mostly of figuration, particularly of dancers. In the 1950s to 1960s, however, Lucy experimented with geometric abstraction that differed from her husband's in its focus on surface texture and materials.
