Romare Howard Bearden (American, 1911-1988) Soldier at the Door Signed "Bearden" l. r. Ink and watercolor on paper, sight size 23 1/4 x 17 in. (59.1 x 43.2 cm), framed. Condition: Taped to beveled mat. Provenance: Private New England collection. N.B. Homer's "The Iliad" was the inspiration for one of Bearden's four literary series created between 1945 and 1948. An exhibition of "The "Iliad" series was held at Niveau Gallery in November 1948. Stylistically, the works were consistent with his earlier literary series, where the colors were "prismatic, enclosed by the architectonics of the lines separating them" akin to the stained glass windows of Chartres cathedral. (1) (1) Schwartzman, Myron. Romare Bearden: His Life & Art. New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1990. Pg. 152 Gummed brown tape hinged along top and right edge to window mat, scotch tape along bottom edge, subtle acid burn verso, subtle toning recto, newspaper sheets from the Brooklyn Eagle (dated Thursday, April 26, 1951) beneath cardstock backing.
