Follower of Jacob van Ruisdael (Dutch, c. 1628-1682) Landscape with Dunes and Figures on a Path Unsigned, red wax seals on the reverse. Oil on panel, 20 5/8 x 26 3/4 in. (52.4 x 67.9 cm), framed. Condition: Minor lifting/flaking, abrasions, surface grime, partial split to panel, fine craquelure. Provenance: The estate of Barbara Green, by descent through the family of William Morris Green. N.B. This painting is closely related to Hilly Dunescape , an untraceable painting known only through photographs, attributed to Ruisdael, and included as No. 625 in the Jacob van Ruisdael catalogue raisonné. The two landscapes have differing provenances, suggesting that this painting may be a copy or another version made by a follower of Jacob van Ruisdael. Very minor lifting/flaking in the area beneath central figures, approx. 6 in. up from bottom and 10-13 inches from left, abrasions beneath frame liner, retouch to sky area in u.l. quadrant over old abrasion approx. 1 in. length, glued partial split across back of panel approx. 24 1/2 in. (and approx. 8 3/4 in. down from top of panel) extending through thre front of panel in the u.r. quadrant approx. 8 1/2 in. length, very fine craquelure in varnish layer, two parallel "scores" to back of panel in l.l. and l.r. quadrant, each approx. 22 in. length, appears to be a hand-planed panel, several small wormage holes to back of panel in l.l. and l.r. quadrant.
