Robert Emmett Owen (American, 1878-1957) Covered Bridge, Autumn Signed "R. Emmett Owen" l.r. Oil on canvas, 26 1/4 x 34 in. (66.7 x 86.4 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, varnish inconsistencies, pinholes along left edge, mild surface grime. Tiny pinhole on edge of left gable of the bridge, 5 inches in from the left edge, and in the lower right corner to the right of the signature. Under UV light there are spots of surface grime or inconsistently applied varnish. There is some natural pigment fluorescence in the sky. Viewed from the back, there is an extra canvas strip added to the right side to extend its width. From the front of the canvas, one can see a vertical line of small tack holes down the left margin, remaining from when the canvas was stretched over a smaller stretcher. There is also an old nail head visible in the center of the right margin. Small canvas deformation in u.r. corner. There is staining to the back of the canvas in the lower left corner.
