Frank Stella (American, b. 1936) Untitled [Study for a Painting], 1970-71 Signed "F. Stella" in pencil l.r., identified on a label from Lawrence Rubin Gallery, New York, on the reverse. Crayon and graphite on paper, sheet size 17 x 22 in. (43.2 x 55.9 cm), framed. Condition: Affixed to backing mat at four corners, not examined out of frame. Provenance: Purchased from Parker Street 470 Gallery Auction, Boston; collection of Melvin B. Nessel, Boston, Massachusetts. Vertical lines visible throughout sheet, most likely acid burn from a former corrugated cardboard backing, probable tear or possible crease in the u.l. quadrant, approx. 1 1/2 in. length, not examined out of frame.
