John William Hill (American, 1812–1879) Lot of Five Bird Studies for Zoology of New York, Part 2, Birds , including The Magpie (pl. 24, fig. 53), The Barn Swallow (pl. 29, fig. 64), The Gr crested Kingbird (pl. 32, fig.70), The Hermit Thrush (pl. 37, fig. 80), and The Green-winged Teal (pl. 112, fig. 249) Each signed "J.W. Hill" l.l., each numbered u.r., annotated l.c. and on supporting boards. Watercolor and ink on paper laid down onto board, image sizes approximately 6 3/4 x 4 1/2 in. (17.1 x 11.4 cm), two framed, three unframed. Condition: Toning, scattered soiling/staining, two not examined out of frames. N.B. The works were studies for Zoology of New York or The New York Fauna by James DeKay and William Henry Seward, published by W. & A. White and J. Visscher, Albany, New York, 1842-1844. Two pieces are framed, three others are matted but not framed. Not able to examine the backs of the watercolors, because they are laid down on cardboard. The magpie has a small vertical abrasion (1 in.) in the head area.
