Pair of Queen Anne Carved Walnut Side Chairs, Boston, c. 1740-60, each with shell-carved cresting and compass slip seat, old surface, (repairs), ht. 41, seat ht. 17 1/2 in. Note: The rear seat rail on each chair is marked with the initials "W.M." In Ethel Hall Bjerkoe's The Cabinetmakers of America (New York, 1957), there is record of a cabinetmaker named William Miller who worked in Charlestown prior to 1775. Provenance: Passed down in the Stone Family of Beverly, Massachusetts. first chair: left front leg has an interior patch near knee and a crack near the foot; same leg has a loss to the pad foot; crack to crestrail where it meets the stile; old medial stretcher is a replacement; second chair: pads worn down and worn on edges.
