Louis XVI Silver Covered Sugar Bowl, Paris. c. 1783, with discharge/export marks, Marc Etienne Jannety, maker, oval, lid with inverted berry finial, with bead and flute bands, the sides of body pierced and cast with finely detailed panels of Dionysian satyr and nude maiden picking grapes, neoclassical trophies, and fruit and floral swag, with bifurcate reeded handles, on horizontally reeded tapering legs ending in leaftip ball feet, with cobalt glass liner, lg. to handles 6 1/2, ht. 5 in., approx. 4 troy oz. weighable silver (lid). Provenance: Engraved "John B. Julien 1794" to underside of foot. Julien was a French-born resident of Boston, Massachusetts, who ran a successful restaurant at the corner of Milk and Congress street, which continued in business by his widow after his death. According to Nathaniel Shurtleff's 1871 A Topographical and Historic Description of Boston, "Monsieur Julien" was well regarded and "his famous soup is not yet excluded from sumptuous bills of fare on festive occasions." good, with minor age wear. marks good. one side of body with later monogram W. underside of body engraved at edge "John B.
