Gorham Coin Silver Presentation Water Pitcher, c. 1862, balustroid, with cast openwork crabstock, flower, and wheat handle, body applied with beaded band at waist, engraved with floral swags and cartouches with engine turned bands, roundel at neck engraved with an industrial interior scene of metalworkers, one side of body with monogram and date 1862, ht. 9 in., approx. 26 troy oz. Provenance: Monogram is that of Allen C. Matthewson, founder of the J.B. Mathewson jewelry manufactory of Providence, Rhode Island. The scene depicts figures at work in their factory. In the National Publishing Company's 1882 printing of Commerce, Manufactures and Resources of the City of Providence , the company is listed as having an office on 20 Maiden Lane, and the factory at 61 Peck Street in the Dyer Land Building. They are noted as employing forty hands, some being "artists of a high order of merit." good, with minor age wear, and some light dings to the plain cartouche at body.
