Sarah Hodges Swan (American, 1825-1910) The Washington Elm of Cambridge, Massachusetts, c. 1895 Initialed and inscribed "S.H.S. from a photograph" l.c. Watercolor on paper, sight size 17 1/4 x 12 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Foxing, mat burn, not examined out of frame. N.B. The artist, a resident of Cambridge, wrote and illustrated The Story of An Old House and of The People Who Lived In It , 1897, an account of her mother's home in Boston, at the corner of Washington and Winter Streets. (1) According to the letter by Swan affixed to the reverse, the view also depicts Dr. Webster's house, which was demolished in 1890.
