Joseph Pennell (American, 1860-1926) The Gâcherel Signed, inscribed and dated "[cipher] Jo PENNELL/Martigues/1890" l. c., inscribed "The Gacherel/.../Painters Paradise" l.r., with a stamp from The Century Company and an unfinished watercolor landscape sketch and notations on the reverse; inscribed "Painters Paradise 1896" on the mat l.r. Pen and ink on paper, 14 1/4 x 20 7/8 in, framed. Condition: Tape around the edges of the reverse, toning, mild acid burn. N.B. This work is one of several by Joseph Pennell illustrated in The Century Vol XLII, May - October 1891 in an article entitled "Play in Provence, A Painter's Paradise" by Elizabeth Robins Pennell, pp. 737-747. The Gâcherel is described as "...a great farm upon the lakeside, with beautiful cypress grove and sunlit garden, where vines overshadowed an old stone well...," p. 739.
