Medallion Commemorating The Battle of Stalingrad Bronze 1942-43 Cast with a soldier with weapon held over his arms with river behind, marked on face, translation Volga 1942-43, dia. 8 in. Note: Volgograd (Volga City), formerly known as Stalingrad, was the site of the bloodiest battle in world history. The German offensive to capture Stalingrad commenced in August 1942, Luftwaffe bombing reduced much of the city to rubble, even so the Germans were unable to dislodge the Soviet troops on the west bank of the Volga River. Failure to provide fresh German troops and to provide food and ammunition to the German soldiers caused the final collapse. In February 1943, German resistance in Stalingrad had ceased and the remaining elements of the surrounded Army had become a casualty or died.
