Salt-glazed Stoneware Mug, probably northern Europe, 19th century, quart mug with applied reeded handle, molded base, wide coggle-decorated band, metallic brown glaze, (base edge chips), ht. 6 3/4 in. Note: According to Lura Woodside Watkins, author of Early New England Potters and their Wares , p. 131, "a number of collectors have mistakenly attributed to Boscawen [New Hampshire] a type of high-fired brown salt-glazed stoneware with incised decoration...this beautifully finishedware is found all along the New England coast where it arrived in ships as containers for imported goods." It has four base edge chips about 1/2 in. lg.
