American School, 19th Century Country Landscape with Two Figures. Signed and dated "A. Andrews H. Warren/185..." l.l. Oil on canvas, 14 x 16 1/8 in., unframed. Condition: Patch reinforcements, punctures, paint losses, possible old retouch, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. The painting bears two signatures in a similar hand. It is possible that the first signature represents Ambrose Andrews (American, 1805-1859); however, the style does not match the published example of his personal signature. The painting bears a date in the 1850s, possibly 1859, the year of Ambrose Andrews' death, suggesting that the work could have been finished and inscribed by the second artist.
