Pottery Jar, Japan, by Totaro Sakuma (1900-1976), iron-glazed jar with faceted surface imitating beehives, ht. 10 7/8 in. N.B. Totaro Sakuma was a student and friend of the famous potter Hamada. He lived and worked in Mashiko, Japan's main center of folk-art pottery. His pieces are especially memorable for the beauty of their design. He once said, "A potter's work must receive affection from his hands. All forms come from the human body. Many pottery forms are not made, but born of early ones."
