Continental Carved Ivory and Silver-mounted Tankard, Germany/Switzerland, late 19th century, the cylindrical body carved from a large tusk with an elaborate continuous scene of Romans battling a tribe and their dogs, bull, and elephant, fitted with Renaissance Revival silver mounting, with slightly domed lid and swelling base chased and embossed with strapwork and trophies, the lid finial a walking bear on an oval fillet of ivory, with cast scrolled handle topped by volute thumb piece and ending in a beast mask, full ht. 13, ivory ht. 7 1/2 in. a vertical line through length of ivory just behind Roman on horseback. scattered losses to ivory carving including end of that rider's spear, reins at bridle, tip of one of the bull's horns, object above bull's hind end, weapon in hand of warrior above hound, part of elephant's trunk and leaves just above. restoration to fist of one warrior. minor overall age wear to silver and ivory. silver hallmarked at footrim just below handle.
