Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669) Descent from the Cross: A Sketch, 1642, an early impression (Bartsch/Hollstein, 82 only state). Signed and dated in the plate, collector's mark from George Björklund (born 1887; Lugt 1138c) on the reverse. Etching and drypoint on laid paper with a partial coat of arms with pendant initials watermark, plate size 5 3/4 x 4 5/8 in. (14.7 x 11.7 cm), matted, unframed. Condition: Margins approximately 1/8 inch, subtle toning/soiling. Provenance: A Rhode Island estate. The sheet measures 6 3 /16 x 4 7/8 inches, and is hinged at the upper corners. The margins are relatively even. The impression is early, but lacking in drypoint burr. There are soiling and stray marks to the verso. The initial image is most accurate in terms of the color and quality of the impression.
