Attributed to Joseph Francis Ellis (British, 1783-1848) The Royal Yacht "ROYAL SOVEREIGN" Off Deptford , 1821 Unsigned, identified on a presentation plaque, inscribed "Joseph ELLIS" on the reverse, with a label from The Parker Gallery, London, affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 28 x 42 in. (71.0 x 46.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, stable craquelure. Small puncture u.r. quadrant about 1/8 inch with paint surface still attached. Retouch in about a dozen spots overall, primarily in the sky, including center left with one 3/1/2 x 2 1/2 in., one 2 x 1 1/2 in., one 1 x 2 inches; center with one 4 x 2 inches. Dots and dashes u.r. with other scattered spots measuring 1 to 1 1/2 inches; in the gable of the shed l.r., measuring 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches; in lower right corner in the hull of the sailboat measuring 3 x 2 inches; in yacht hull, lower left, measuring 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches. Some of the retouch corresponds to repairs visible on the reverse. The retouch generally is very subtle. The vessels are largely unaffected except as noted.
