John Russell (British, 1745-1806) Portrait of Miss Murray Unsigned, identified on a presentation plaque. Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 in. (76.2 x 63.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, minor skinning. In a signed and dated frame, with the incised frame maker's name obscured by brown paper tape. Stretcher weakened and tacking edges degraded. Stretcher incised with the names of the sitter and the artist along the top bar. Paint losses l.r. in an area measuring 2 x 1 inch overall, with the largest loss measuring 1/4 inch square. Paint losses with flaking in the u.l. corner, with the largest loss measuring 1/2 x 1/4 inch. Craquelure overall, with craquelure with shrinking in the hair. Retouch as follows: in area of sitter's left arm (l.r. quadrant) 4 inches wide and running at a diagonal of 8 inches up to the cuff of the blouse; highlighting of the hair, particularly in the bangs and curls at the sitter's temple and in the cascade of hair on her shoulder; small area under the sitter's nose; highlights along bow of the sash and cuffs of both sleeves. Older washes of retouch to the sitter's face and chest.
