American School, 19th Century Portrait of a Gentleman and His Spaniel. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 32 x 24 in., in a gilt-gesso molded wood frame. Condition: Relined, scattered small spots of retouch, scratch l.c. Provenance: The painting was formerly in the Maxim and Martha (Codman) Karolik collection and retains a Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, label. The painting was probably exhibited at the Museum's bicentennial celebration, which featured the Martha and Maxim Karolik Collection of American Art in 1976. The gentleman is thought by some to resemble Nathaniel Hawthorne. The painting has been relined. There are scattered small spots of retouch on face, coat, outline of trousers, and scattered spots in background, there's a scratch about 3 in. on the gentleman's coat at l.c.
