Continental School, 19th Century A Conversation Portrait Unsigned, with an inscribed label affixed to the reverse. Oil on metal, 10 x 8 in. (25.32 x 20.5 cm), framed. Condition: Minor surface imperfections and frame abrasions. N.B. Eighteenth-century painters used the term "conversation" to describe informal group portraits, often showing family and friends enjoying a common activity, such a meal. These scenes are a form of genre painting. The work at hand, showing a family at leisure in a garden, is a later copy that depicts the costumes and setting of 18th-century examples. Inscribed on a label affixed to the reverse, "Genre-Bild, Das ..../ Grand No. 5/Sujet No. 114."
