Anton Melbye (Danish, 1818-1875) Sailing Ships in Heavy Seas Signed and dated "Anton Melbye 1862" l. l. Oil on canvas, 28 1/8 x 42 1/2 in. (71.5 x 108.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, abrasion with paint loss u.c., scattered paint losses, craquelure, discolored varnish, surface grime, staining to the reverse. Lining is old. Craquelure with lifting and paint losses along the bottom edge. Abrasion u.c. measures 3/4 in. Area of old retouch or perhaps varnish inconsistency c.l. around the tip of the mast of the foreground ship measuring approximately 3 x 5 inches overall. Framed within a frame liner.
