Ralph Albert Blakelock (American, 1847-1919) Hudson River-style Landscape Signed "Blakelock" l. r. Oil on canvas, 12 x 20 in. (30.5 x 51.0 cm), framed (under glass). Condition: Craquelure, varnish irregularities, minor frame abrasions, surface grime. Provenance: From a private New Jersey collection, then by descent to the current owner. N.B. Dr. Norman Geske of the University of Nebraska Blakelock Inventory has accepted the painting at hand as a Category Two work, and assigned the registration number NB-2054-II. In his report, Dr. Geske described the painting as "...an unusually refined example of the artist's early work in the spirit of the Hudson River school, indicated by the meticulous rendering of the tree forms and the specific detailing of the figures and the boat in the foreground. Also, the quality of the signature (lacking the initials) with the single underlining stroke in black pigment are dependable indications of authenticity, as seen in examples of unquestionable authenticity."
