Jules Dupré (French, 1811-1889) L'abreuvoir or A Farm in Normandy Signed "Jules Dupré" l. l. Oil on canvas, 11 3/4 x 18 1/4 in. (30.0 x 46.3 cm), unframed. Condition: Lined, paint losses, retouch, craquelure, yellowed varnish. Provenance: Sotheby's New York: June 6, 2008, Old Master & 19th Century European Art, Lot 123. N.B. Digital photographs of the present painting were reviewed by Cabinet Michel Rodrigue in Paris, who confirmed that the work appears in the Jules Dupré catalogue raisonne as no. 76 bis , under the title L'abreuvoir . A variant of the painting is in the Musée des Beaux-arts de Reims. The landscape shows the influence of John Constable, whose paintings inspired Dupré during the late 1830s. Small chips of paint losses to l.l. quadrant, with the largest cluster grouped within an area measuring 1 inch square overall, and with two smaller areas of about 1/2 inch each overall. Small dots of retouch covering some of these losses. Retouch also at u.r. corner. Badly discolored varnish which has been removed in the u.r. quadrant in an area measuring 3 x 2 1/2 inches. Paint losses along the outside edge along the stretcher at l.r. and u.r., and wear to the l.l. corner. Craquelure overall.
