Blooms for Books A Floral Interpretation of the French School Portrait Gentlewoman as Diana. The arrangement includes white hydrangea, magnolia leaves, feverfew, white tulips, curly willow, Queen Anne's lace, and plumosa fern. N.B. As the goddess of the hunt, the inspiration for Diana's portrait in flowers was woodland flora. Magnolia leaves were selected to represent her feathered sash, and each one was individually hand-wired to create volume without bulk. The arrangement quotes the "Line of Beauty", or 'S-curve' visible in the painting, which William Hogarth described in his 18th century aesthetic treatise, Analysis of Beauty, as conveying liveliness and movement. All of the proceeds for this arrangement will benefit the Fine Arts Research Library at the Boston Public Library.
