Emile Eisman-Semenowsky (Polish, 1857-1911) Portrait of a Woman in Black Signed "Eisman-Semenowsky" l. l., identified on a presentation plaque, with a stencil from Adele Deswarte, Bruxelles, on the reverse. Oil on panel, 12 1/2 x 9 1/4 in. (31.8 x 23.5 cm), framed. Condition: Craquelure, subtle varnish inconsistencies. There are scattered areas of retouch, one measuring 1-1/4 inches across, located to the right of the sitter's collar, a small line (3/4 in.) to the right along the sitter's chin, and scattered spots in the hat and collar. There may be older retouch to the lips and to the background, or these areas may be varnish inconsistencies. The face appears relatively untouched. The panel is a little small for the frame, and a strip has been added at the top (long ago) and painted to match the background of the panel. There are paint losses along the top edge of the panel where it meets this strip.
