Austrian/German School, 20th Century View of Houses on a Hill Initialed and dated "... 22" in pencil l.r., identified on a label from Este Gallery, New York. Watercolor and graphite on cream wove paper with blue threads, sheet size 13 1/4 x 16 1/2 in. (33.7 x 41.9 cm), unframed. Condition: Taped to backing mat, restored tear to u.l. quadrant. Provenance: Ex-collection of art historian Dr. Hans Tietze (1880-1954) and Erica Tietze-Conrat through Este Gallery, New York, gift from the late collection of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Polk, Long Island, New York, and Midvale, New Jersey, to the present owner. Tear to u.l. edge about 1-3/4 in. long (4.0 cm), having been repaired with tape to the reverse, but the tape has become partially detached. Tape applied to l.l. edge of reverse, but with no apparent corresponding tear to the front. Small tear u.r. edge, measuring 1/8 inch (0.5 cm), located to the left of the hinge. Small tear 3/16 inch (0.4 cm) to l.l. edge. Handing creases, mainly to lower edge of sheet. Toning and subtle rippling.
