William Lester Stevens (American, 1888-1969) The Red Barn Signed "W. LESTER STEVENS" l.r., identified on a label from The Philadelphia Sketch Club affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in. (40.5 x 50.7 cm), framed. Condition: Craquelure, surface grime. Provenance: Received as wedding present c. 1940, then by family descent. Exhibitions: 1927 Exhibition of Sketches by Philadelphia Artists, The Philadelphia Sketch Club. Surface is very dirty. One area of craquelure that starts just above the signature and extends approximately 9 inches up and 3 inches across. A second less pronounced area of craquelure to lower left corner, 1-1/2 inches high and 1 inch across. Scattered small cracks to paint surface left center. No apparent paint losses or lifting. Very minor canvas deformation in three corners (u.r., l.r., and l.l.).
