Jane Peterson (American, 1876-1965) Canal Venice Signed "JANE PETERSON" l. l., identified on two labels affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 40 x 30 in. (101.5 x 76.0 cm), in a Newcomb-Macklin Company frame. Condition: Patch reinforcements, retouch, craquelure. Provenance: Kaminski Auctions, Beverly, Massachusetts, January 23, 1993, # 1. N.B. Jane Peterson loved Venice. It was one of her favorite places to paint. In the view at hand of a narrow canal she played masterfully with the contrast of warm light and cool shadow. Peterson enlivened the scene with figures gathered along the walkway and with bold brushwork in the reflections in the water. Peterson expert Jonathan Joseph described the painting as a fine example of her early work, probably executed prior to Peterson's study with Joaquín Sorolla in 1909. Peterson first visited Venice in 1907. We would like to thank Jonathan Joseph, who reviewed the present painting via digital photographs and confirmed its authenticity. Two handwritten gummed labels are affixed to the reverse. Text of one (partial) label: "34. Canal Venice/Artist Jane Pet.../Price $8.../Return to Budworth/424 W. 52nd St. New York City." Text of second label: "Name Venice/Artist Jane Peterson/58 W. 57th St./N.Y.C./Price $600/Agent Budworth." Frame with Newcomb-Macklin Co., New York, label affixed to the reverse of the upper horizontal molding. Retouch to u.r. quadrant: spot 1 inch in diameter located 2 inches down and 9 inches in from t
