Continental School, 20th Century Portrait of Jack Johnson (1876-1946) Signed "Mercedes B. de Garimaldi" within the cast, sitter identified on a presentation plaque, foundry stamped "FUNDACION "RADAELLI" on the reverse. Bronze with dark brown patina, 14 x 9 x 7 in. (35.6 x 22.9 x 17.8 cm), mounted to a marble plinth. Condition: Minor abrasion to the reverse. N.B. John Arthur ("Jack") Johnson was the first African American boxer to win the world heavyweight title on December 26, 1908 against Canadian Tommy Burns in Australia. Small abrasion to proper left cheek, measuring 1/4 inch. Dust and dirt to interstices. No additional condition issues to report. Plinth measures 6 x 6 x 5 inches.
