Hendrik Goltzius (Dutch, 1558-1617) Pietà , 1596. Monogrammed and dated within the plate. Engraving on paper, image size 6 7/8 x 4 7/8 in. (17.5 x 12.4 cm), framed. Condition: Trimmed just outside of the border (missing the blank space beneath the image), fox mark or stain to image u.r., gentle rippling, not examined out of frame. Provenance: A Massachusetts collecting institution. Out of the frame the sheet is hinged near the upper corners, and has a shield-like watermark just over 3 inches tall. There is a 3/8 inch tear to the left edge in line with Christ's right hand. There are pencil annotations and an unidentified collector's stamp on the verso.
