Attributed to Gustav de Galard (French, 1777-1840) Portrait of a Gentleman in Early 19th Century Attire Signed "Galard" c. l. Oil on canvas, 25 x 21 in. (63.5 x 53.3 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, surface grime. Area of retouch/repair measuring 9 x 7 inches at its extreme dimensions located center left and including a line of retouch to the figure's face, stretching from the corner of the proper right eye to the corner of the mouth (approximately 5 1/2 in. long and 1/2 in. wide); an area of retouch at the bottom right of the figure's chin and ending above the bow tie, measuring 1 1/2 in. long and up to 1 in. wide; scattered dots of retouch to the face and to the bow tie and shirt, probably to fill craquelure; retouch throughout background including an area of old repair to right center, to the right of the sitter's face, but not impacting the face. Areas of repair are visible under raking light as surface imperfections. Stable craquelure. Painting is heavily varnished, particularly in the background.
